ASSISTANT TO THE DIRECTOR - CENTER FOR ADVANCED ENGINEERING ENVIRONMENTS - JOB #05029

The Old Dominion University Center for Advanced Engineering Environments is currently accepting applications for an Assistant to the Director.

Major responsibility is to provide professional and confidential support to the Director of the Center and his staff by performing a wide variety of technical and administrative duties including word processing, spreadsheet applications, budget preparation, and creating databases and acting as liaison between different education institutions, NASA, and various industry partners; and organize workshop to include registering applicants, arranging travel, maintaining an informational website, corresponding with participants, editing the proceedings, reimbursing expenses, catering, and lecture scheduling.

Other Duties Include:

  • Composing all center correspondence
  • Organizing national / local conferences and workshops to include registering applicants, arranging travel, maintaining an information website

  • Filing and creating databases (log-in / track information)
  • Conducting technical web searches
  • Updating sections of the Center's web page

  • Processing personnel forms and employment applications
  • Making travel arrangements for Director, staff, and Center visitors
  • Answering phones, taking messages, and responding to inquiries using judgment and knowledge of Center activities
  • Maintaining a log of internal and external journal submissions

Requirements:

  • Experience in office management for academic and/or technical organizations
  • Fast typing (shorthand desirable)
  • Microsoft Word (and equation editor)
  • Microsoft Powerpoint
  • Experience in preparing budgets
  • Basic knowledge of html (desirable)
  • Use of databases

RESEARCH ASSOCIATE - JOB #05028

The Program for Research and Evaluation in Public Schools (PREPS) within the Old Dominion University (ODU) Darden College of Education, seeks a Research Associate. Associate will be responsible for K-12 research and evaluation in direct support of PREPS member K-12 school districts in the areas of teacher quality, closing the achievement gap, and equity research. The hired candidate will be required to generate funds to support PREPS.

Required qualifications: (1) Ph.D. in Education, Education Research, or other discipline related to public education. (2) Experience performing R&D in public education. Preferred qualifications: (1) Action research experience in public schools. (2) Experience in developing public school teacher quality professional development design and delivery, and (3) membership in national networks.

Associate will be responsible for the coordination and management of research on learning in education. Incumbent will work with national organizations to acquire funding for teacher quality research and research on learning in education. Tasks include developing and implementing professional development designs, resource acquisition, and design and development of classroom materials to support of language development.

Incumbent will perform a leadership role in supporting the implementation of PREPS projects; facilitate special and unique working groups (primarily district educators and researchers) to design, evaluate, and implement district action research projects; and assist in the management and implementation of the PREPS Center.

Previous experience needed in supporting the research proposal solicitation processes for education, managing the collection, appraisal, analysis, or synthesis of information pertinent to designated mission areas; analytical ability to understand the content and context of technical research documents and communicating that information to senior level research and management personnel, and facilitating the work of involved personnel; ability to organize large amounts of information and write clear instructions, particularly for the recording of information and design of an electronic data base.

POST DOCTORAL RESEARCH ASSOCIATE - JOB #05030

A Post Doctoral Researcher position is open at the Earth Observing and Information Lab of Old Dominion University. The successful candidate will work on a project funded by National Science Foundation. This position will be filled immediately upon identification of a suitable candidate. Applicants should have a recent Ph.D. degree in Photogrammetry, Image Processing, Geoinformation or a related field. Knowledge in remote sensing/ photogrammetry, image processing, image orthorectification and GIS is desirable. The successful candidate will conduct research on orthorectification, city 3-D GIS, and coordinate activities with other research teams and government agencies. Strong communication skills are required. The salary is commensurate with experience. The original appointment is for one year. Extension is possible depending on availability of funding and performance.

POST DOCTORAL RESEARCH ASSOCIATE - #05024

Department of Mathematics & Statistics at Old Dominion University (ODU), Norfolk, Virginia 23529, USA, invites applications for one Post-Doctoral position and PhD candidate positions.

(1) Post-Doctoral position to work on simulations of thermo-chemically nonequilibrium flows. Required skills for the position are: proficient in programming languages (Fortran 77/90/95, or C, or C++) and familiar with parallel computation (MPI or OpenMP) on various platforms; familiar with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques such as finite difference, finite volume and pseudo-spectral methods, and other numerical techniques such as multigrid and adjoint methods for solving PDE's. Basic knowledge of kinetic theory and lattice Boltzmann equation
(LBE) would be a plus but not required.

(2) We are also interested in PhD students to work in the following areas: (1) lattice Boltzmann equation and its applications (2) gas-kinetic method for non-equilibrium flows; and (3) mesoscopic methods for soft matters and complex fluids.

EQUIPMENT SPECIALIST - JOB #05008

Assists the technical serves area in Ocean Earth and Atmospheric Sciences Dept. with the operation, maintenance, and repair of the marine science equipment including equipment on board R/V Fay Slover and the departmental oceanographic instrument systems.

Operates small boats in the Chesapeake Bay and adjacent coastal ocean. Requires participation on multi-day research cruises to perform support related activities, cruise planning, route planning, acquiring necessary equipment and supplies and standing watches during the cruise. Design and fabrication of specialized equipment for oceanography instrumentation under tight time constraints is necessary.

Associates degree or BA degree and two years working experience in marine science or other technical field, basic electronic skills, including simple schematics, soldering, circuit testing, small boat handling and trailering. Solid mechanical skills and the ability to work with little supervision are critical. Ability to lift 70 pounds and willingness to perform sea duty involving travel, both domestic and foreign is required. Prior experience with oceanographic instrumentation and experience with boats up to 60 ft.
